How to Choose a Vocational School near Glendale Arizona

Glendale AZ plumber installing sinkChoosing to enter into a new occupation and enroll in a vocational school near Glendale AZ are important decisions that will greatly affect your future career. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you approach finding the ideal one? Not only do you need to confirm that you will get the extensive training needed to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some students make the error of selecting a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might be attracted to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are significant factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they should not be the only ones. Other factors such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review several of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are offered including the accessibility of online programs.

Vocational School Training Options near Glendale AZ

Possibly you have already selected one that you have for years desired to pursue. For example, maybe you have always had fun working on your car and have given thought to utilizing that ability to earn a living as an automotive tech. Or maybe a family member has had a long and successful career in a particular vocation or trade and you would love to follow in his or her footsteps. No matter what your motivation is for going into a trade, there is probably a program available that will provide the training you require. Following is merely a modest representation of the trade school programs that are offered in the Glendale AZ area.

  • Auto Mechanic
  • Heating And Air Conditioning (HVAC) Tech
  • Plumber
  • Electrical Technician
  • Welding
  • Truck Driver
  • Aircraft Maintenance Tech
  • Lab Technician
  • Construction Management

All programs will have varying completion times and costs based upon the trade, type of credential and school. A number of the programs may be completed in a few weeks, while others will necessitate months or even two or more years of training. All of these aspects need to be taken into account before choosing a trade and a school.

Learning a Trade Online

man attending trade school online in Glendale AZSchools available online have become more attractive with Glendale AZ students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online learning, such as studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

When you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Glendale AZ area and throughout the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Glendale AZ area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Glendale AZ is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Glendale AZ area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Glendale AZ area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Glendale AZ contractor if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Arizona and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Glendale AZ, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Considering a Trade School near Glendale AZ?

If you are looking at a trade school near Glendale AZ, following is some interesting and relevant information regarding the location of your future school campus that may help you in making your decision.

Glendale, Arizona

Glendale /ˈɡlɛndeɪl/ is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, located about nine miles (14 km) northwest from Downtown Phoenix. According to the 2017 U.S. Census estimates, the population of the city is 246,709.[3]

In the late 1800s what is now known as Glendale, Arizona, was all desert. William John Murphy, a native of New Hartford, New York, who resided in the town of Flagstaff in what was then known as the territory of Arizona, was in charge of building a 40-mile-long (64 km) Arizona Canal from Granite Reef to New River for the Arizona Canal Company. In 1885, he completed the canal, which would bring water to the desert land.[5] Murphy was deep in debt, since he had agreed to be paid in Arizona Canal Company stock and bonds and land instead of cash.[6]

In 1887, Murphy formed the Arizona Improvement Company. His objective was to sell the land and water rights south of the canal. Murphy had to raise capital from out of state sources in order to meet payroll and construction expenses.[6] Murphy decided to refer to this land as "Glendale". In order to develop and interest potential investors and settlers in this new town, Murphy decided to provide a better way of access from Phoenix to Glendale and ending in the town of Peoria by building an 18-mile-long (29 km) diagonal road which he named Grand Avenue.
