Fairburn GA plumber installing sinkDeciding to enter into a new profession and enroll in a trade school near Fairburn GA are important decisions that will profoundly influence your long term career. However with so many trade schools to choose from, just how do you go about locating the right one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will get the comprehensive training required to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some potential students make the error of selecting a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or where the work. Or they might be attracted to the school that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are important considerations when evaluating vocational school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Added variables including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review some of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are offered including the accessibility of online schools.

Perhaps you have already decided on one that you have long wished to pursue. For example, maybe you have always enjoyed working on your car and have considered using that ability to earn a living as an auto mechanic. Or maybe a member of the family has had a prosperous career in a particular vocation or trade and you would love to follow in his or her footsteps. Whatever your motivation is for entering a trade, there is likely a program available that will give you the training you require. Below is just a modest representation of the trade school programs that are available in the Fairburn GA area.

  • Auto Mechanic
  • Heating And Air Conditioning (HVAC) Tech
  • Plumber
  • Electrical Technician
  • Welder
  • Truck Driving
  • Aircraft Maintenance Tech
  • Lab Technician
  • Construction Management

All programs will have differing completion times and costs based upon the trade, credential earned and school. Some of the programs may be completed in a few weeks, while others will necessitate months or even 2 or more years of schooling. Each of these elements must be taken into account prior to choosing a trade and a school.

Learning a Trade Online

man attending trade school online in Fairburn GATrade Schools online have become very popular with Fairburn GA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online education, such as studying driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Once you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Fairburn GA area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Fairburn GA area technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Fairburn GA is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Fairburn GA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Fairburn GA area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Fairburn GA company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Georgia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Fairburn GA, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
