Many students make the mistake of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or where the work. Others may gravitate to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are important factors when assessing vocational school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Other variables such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will cover a few of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Maybe you have already selected one that you have long wished to pursue. For example, maybe you have always enjoyed working on your car and have given thought to using that skill to make a living as a car mechanic. Or maybe a family member has had a prosperous career in a certain trade or vocation and you would love to follow in her or his footsteps. Whatever your motivation is for going into a trade, there is likely a program offered that will give you the training that you require. Below is merely a modest representation of the vocational training programs that are offered in the Tucker GA area.

  • Auto Mechanic

  • Electrician
  • Welding
  • Truck Driving

  • Construction Manager

Each of the programs will have differing completion times and costs depending on the vocation, type of credential and school. A number of the programs may be completed in a few weeks, while others will call for months or even 2 or more years of schooling. All of these elements need to be considered before selecting a vocation and school.

Online Vocational Schools

man attending trade school online in Tucker GASchools available online have become very popular with Tucker GA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online learning, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Once you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many technical schools in the  Tucker GA area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Tucker GA area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Tucker GA is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Tucker GA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Tucker GA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Tucker GA contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Georgia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Tucker GA, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation ceded the land to the United States in January of that year, and drawings for lots measuring 202.5 acres (81.9 ha) each began in May in Milledgeville, the state capital until 1868. The land grant fee was $19.00.[10]
