However with so many trade schools to select from, just how do you go about finding the right one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will obtain the complete training necessary to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of potential students make the mistake of selecting a vocational school simply because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they may gravitate to the school that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are important considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they must not be the only ones. Added variables such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions shortly in this article. But to start with, let’s look at some of the vocation options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Perhaps you have already decided on one that you have long wished to pursue. For instance, perhaps you have always had fun working on your car and have considered utilizing that ability to earn a living as an auto mechanic. Or perhaps a member of the family has had a prosperous career in a certain trade or vocation and you would love to follow in her or his footsteps. Regardless of what your inspiration is for entering a trade, there is probably a program offered that will provide the training you need. Below is just a modest representation of the trade school programs that are available in the Wyoming PA area.

  • Auto Mechanic

Each of the programs will have differing completion times and costs based upon the trade, type of credential and school. Some of the programs may be completed in a few weeks, while others will necessitate months or even 2 or more years of instruction. All of these variables must be considered before selecting a vocation and school.

Learning a Trade Online

man attending trade school online in Wyoming PAOnline schools have become more attractive with Wyoming PA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online training, for example learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

After you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Wyoming PA area and all over the United States to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Wyoming PA area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Wyoming PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Wyoming PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Wyoming PA area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Wyoming PA contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Wyoming PA, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
